Celebrate America250 in Leesburg

As the nation prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, communities across the country are reflecting on the people, places, and events that shaped America’s story. In Leesburg, that history is all around us.

Founded in 1758, Leesburg was already a thriving colonial community when tensions between Great Britain and the American colonies began to rise. In 1774, local leaders gathered at the Loudoun County Courthouse to adopt the Loudoun Resolves, expressing support for the people of Boston and opposition to British policies. Those actions placed Loudoun County among the many communities that contributed to the nation’s path toward independence.

This summer, residents and visitors are invited to explore that history through a variety of America 250 programs and events taking place throughout Leesburg.

One of the best opportunities to experience America250 in Leesburg will be on Independence Day. Start the day with the Town’s annual Independence Day Parade, then spend the afternoon in historic downtown. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Loudoun County Courthouse grounds, visitors can explore exhibits from the Loudoun County Circuit Court Historic Records and Thomas Balch Library, meet reenactors, participate in hands-on activities, enjoy guided tours, and hear a live reading of the Declaration of Independence. The Loudoun Museum will also be open, featuring its exhibit, Life, Liberty & Loudoun! Revolutionary Stories. After a day of history and celebration, head to Ida Lee Park for the Town’s Independence Day festivities and fireworks display.

Visitors can also experience the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ 21st-century Artmobile when VMFA on the Road visits Ida Lee Park on July 4th. The traveling exhibition, Virginia as America: Navigating Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, explores the American ideals first expressed in the Declaration of Independence through 14 works of art from the VMFA collection. Paintings, prints, and decorative objects invite visitors to reflect on the promise of “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” and the ongoing pursuit of a more perfect union.

For those looking to dive deeper into local history, the Thomas Balch Library is hosting a variety of America 250-related exhibits, pop-up programs, and special events throughout the year. These offerings provide opportunities to explore Loudoun County’s unique role in the Revolutionary era and learn more about the individuals whose stories helped shape the region. Whether you’re a longtime history buff or simply curious to learn more, there are plenty of ways to engage with the commemoration close to home.

Visitors can also explore Revolutionary-era Leesburg through the free Revolutionary War Tour in the Tour Leesburg app. This self-guided stroll through the historic district traces how one of Virginia’s fastest-growing colonial towns was shaped by global conflict, local politics, and the experiences of everyday people during the struggle for independence. Along the way, participants will discover the people, places, and events that connected Loudoun County to the American Revolution while gaining a deeper appreciation for the challenges of interpreting a story that unfolded nearly 250 years ago.

In addition to local programs, the Town’s America 250 webpage features videos, story maps, educational resources, and a community calendar designed to help residents and visitors connect with this historic milestone.

The 250th anniversary of American independence is more than a celebration of the past. It is an opportunity to reflect on the people, ideas, and experiences that shaped our nation while exploring the local stories that continue to make Leesburg a special place today.

Whether you’re attending a community event, visiting an exhibit, taking a walking tour, or simply spending time in historic downtown, this summer offers countless opportunities to discover and celebrate America’s story right here in Leesburg.
